Respirator Fit Testing

Quantitative and qualitative respirator fit testing

Accurate Consulting offers both quantitative and qualitative respirator fit testing for New Zealand workplaces. Contact us with your location, the number of people to be tested and the make and model of the respirators you use so we can discuss a suitable testing arrangement.

Which fit test do you need?

Quantitative fit testing uses specialist equipment to measure leakage into a tight-fitting respirator and produce a numerical fit factor. Qualitative fit testing assesses the seal using the wearer’s response to a test substance, usually detected by taste or smell. The appropriate method depends on the respirator and the protection required for the work. We can help you identify the suitable test when you enquire.

Preparing for your appointment

Tell us which respirator models and sizes your team wears, and bring the respirator and any other protective equipment that could affect its fit. The face-seal area must be free of facial hair that interferes with the seal. Ask our team for preparation instructions and appointment timings when booking.

Fit testing as part of respiratory protection

A fit test assesses a particular respirator on an individual wearer. A user seal check is also needed each time a tight-fitting respirator is put on. Respirator selection, filter selection, maintenance and training remain important parts of an effective respiratory protection programme.

WorkSafe recommends repeat fit testing at least yearly, and following significant changes to facial characteristics that may affect fit. Read WorkSafe’s respiratory protection advice for businesses.

Frequently asked questions

Should I book quantitative or qualitative fit testing?

Accurate offers both methods. Quantitative testing uses equipment to produce a numerical fit factor. Qualitative testing uses the wearer’s response to a test substance. Tell us the respirator make, model and size, the tasks undertaken and the protection required so we can confirm a suitable method.

Is a fit test the same as a seal check?

No. A fit test assesses a particular respirator on an individual wearer. A user seal check is carried out when putting the respirator on; it does not replace fit testing.

What should we send when booking a team?
